Where is Ponte di Legno and how do I get there?

Ponte di Legno is at the head of Val Camonica, in the province of Brescia, at 1,257 m. By car you arrive from Edolo along the valley, from Trentino over the Tonale Pass (1,883 m) and, in summer, from Bormio and Valfurva over the Gavia Pass (2,621 m), which is closed in winter. A gondola lift links the village to the Tonale Pass.

Discover Ponte di Legno

The bridge that gives the village its name crossed the Frigidolfo stream, where the old centre stood: today it is Piazza XXVII Settembre. Wood, though, has little to do with it. "Di Legno" is a reinterpretation of Dalegno, the old name of this part of Val Camonica, which already appears as Dalanias in a charter of Charlemagne from 774.

The square recalls 27 September 1917, when the village, already evacuated, was shelled by Austrian guns. The front was close: until 1918 the Tonale Pass marked the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Rebuilding began after the war, and as early as 1921 the press was celebrating "Pontedilegno risorta", Ponte di Legno risen again, although the work went on in the years that followed.

Skiing here is more than a century old: the Ski Club Ponte di Legno dates from 1911, and the following year the Touring Club Italiano named the village Italy's first tourism and winter sports resort. Since 2006 a gondola lift has linked it to the Tonale Pass, in a ski area of about 100 kilometres of pistes that reaches the Presena glacier, between 2,700 and 3,000 metres.

Ponte di Legno is the northernmost municipality in the province of Brescia. Four valleys converge on the village: Valle delle Messi and Valle di Viso from the north, Val Sozzine and Val Bione from the south. The hamlet of Pezzo, at 1,565 metres, is the highest village in the province lived in all year round.
