Where is Malles and how do I get there?

Malles (Mals in German) is in upper Val Venosta (Vinschgau), in South Tyrol, at 1,051 m. By train it is the terminus of the Val Venosta railway from Merano. By car you arrive from Merano along the valley, from Austria over the Reschen Pass and from Switzerland through Val Müstair.

Discover Malles (Mals)

Malles (Mals) used to be called the "Siebentürmige", the village of seven towers: five remain today, bell towers plus the Fröhlichsturm, a castle keep about 33 metres high. The village, at 1,051 metres, is first mentioned in 1094. The church of St Benedict, built in the 8th century, preserves Carolingian frescoes.

Around the village spreads the Malser Haide, an alluvial fan of about 13 square kilometres formed by the Plawenn stream: it rises from Glorenza (Glurns), at 900 metres, to 1,760 and is considered the largest in the Alps. An old irrigation system of channels, the Waale, runs across it. Above Burgusio (Burgeis), at about 1,340 metres, Marienberg is the highest Benedictine abbey in Europe: founded at Scuol, in the Engadin, at the end of the 11th century, it moved to Val Venosta (Vinschgau) in the mid-12th.

The camera looks over the basin from 1,720 metres, almost 700 metres above the village. The local mountain is the Watles (2,555 m), in the Sesvenna group: its ski area runs from 1,740 to 2,500 metres, with two chairlifts and a drag lift, and starts at Prämajur. From up here you can tell whether the snow has come down to the valley floor or stopped on the upper meadows.
