The webcam shows it in real time, with the time of the snapshot. Sondrio sits at 308 metres: snow in the town is rare and does not last, while on the mountains around it there can be snow as early as November.

What is there to see in Sondrio?

Piazza Garibaldi with its 19th-century palazzi, Palazzo Pretorio in Piazza Campello, now the town hall, Castel Masegra with its museum of mountain stories, and the terraced vineyards of Sassella and Grumello, which begin right above the town.

Discover Sondrio

Piazza Garibaldi is the young part of Sondrio. Until the early 19th century there were fields and farm buildings here; then came the Regia Strada Postale, the royal post road that replaced the old Via Valeriana, and the Austrian government set out to make the square the centre of a modern provincial capital. The people of Sondrio called it "Piazza nuova" to tell it apart from "Piazza vecchia", today's Piazza Cavour.

The name changed with the governments. The square was first named after Emperor Francis I and then, with the unification of Italy, after Victor Emmanuel II. In September 1909 the statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, by the sculptor Francesco Confalonieri, was placed at its centre, and the name has stayed ever since. On the north-west side, in front of Palazzo Martinengo, a monument of 1839 commemorates Ferdinand I of Austria and the embankments of the Mallero, built after the flood of 1834.

In 1512 the Three Leagues of Graubünden moved the seat of government of Valtellina from Tresivio to Sondrio, and in 1839 an imperial decree raised it to the rank of royal town. The railway arrived from Colico on 16 June 1885 and went on to Tirano in 1902. Today there are about 21,000 inhabitants, and in 2007 Sondrio was Alpine Town of the Year. For the weather in the rest of the valley, see the Sondrio page, the other Valtellina webcams, Morbegno, Valmalenco or the map.
