Discover Grosio Village
Grosio stands at the mouth of Val Grosina, the side valley of the Roasco stream: it splits into two branches, the Eita and the Sacco, and climbs to the 3,374 metres of Cima Viola. It lies within the municipality, which covers almost 127 square kilometres. The village is at 656 metres, with the hamlets of Ravoledo, Tiolo and Vernuga.
Of the two castles, the older is San Faustino: built between the end of the 10th and the beginning of the 11th century, it appears in 1150 as Castrum Groxi. The Castello Nuovo was built by the Visconti between 1350 and 1375, with a double ring of walls. Entrusted to the Venosta family, they were dismantled after 1526 by order of the Graubünden rulers. Below the rock stands the Roasco hydroelectric plant of 1922, designed by the architect Piero Portaluppi.
In the village, the 16th-century Villa Visconti Venosta was remodelled in the late 19th century by Emilio Visconti Venosta, foreign minister of the Kingdom of Italy; the family lived there until 1982, and today it houses the museum and the library. The church of San Giorgio has a wooden altarpiece of 1494, painted by Andrea Passeri. Before you head up towards Bormio, the image shows the weather and whether the snow has come down to 650 metres. Did you know?
The Rupe Magna was only recognised in 1966, by Davide Pace: its more than 5,000 figures, carved between the end of the Neolithic and the Iron Age, were recorded one by one between 1991 and 1995.
