In the 19th century many people from Poschiavo emigrated as pastry chefs and café owners, above all to Spain and Portugal, but also to France and England. In 2025 Poschiavo received the Wakker Prize, which the Swiss Heritage Society awards each year, usually to a municipality, for the care of its built fabric. The centre of the town, at 1,014 metres, is the Plazza da Cumün, the town square: on it stand the collegiate church of San Vittore, rebuilt in Gothic style between 1497 and 1503, and the town hall tower, which began life as a defensive tower.
The town has belonged to Graubünden since 1408, when the valley joined the League of God's House; the first documented municipal statutes date from 1388. For the Church the tie with the south lasted longer: the Catholics of Poschiavo came under the diocese of Como until 1870. On 18 July 1987 a flood did serious damage in the centre, and the buildings were then carefully restored. Other great floods are recorded in 1566, 1572 and 1834.
For the weather, take the figures from the MeteoSwiss station at 1,078 metres: between 1991 and 2020 the mean annual temperature was 7.6 degrees, with −1.4 in January, the coldest month, and 16.5 in July, the warmest. About 1,085 millimetres of rain and snow fall in a year. See the other Poschiavo webcams, Le Prese on the lake, the Bernina Pass, Valposchiavo or the map.
